How long to partition a drive
Similarly, if you run different operating systems OS on separate partitions and one becomes damaged, you could boot your computer from the other this is commonly done with Windows and Linux. This allows you to minimize the impact of data corruption, viruses, and crashes.
If done incorrectly, partitioning can unintentionally reduce total storage space. Multiple partitions require the system to duplicate certain file administration areas, and having the same duplicate files on different partitions will also take up more space than normal.
Duplicated files on the same partition just require the system to update the metadata, but on separate partitions you will need to copy the entirety of the file, essentially doubling the space used.
Depending on how you allocate space among each partition, you might also prevent yourself from using your whole disk capacity. If you are accessing data from multiple partitions, this will also reduce system performance since you will have to move back and forth on the disk to access, maintain and update data on each partition.
Primary partitions contain a single file system. However, if you are resizing AND moving the Windows partition, you might be in for trouble. Windows doesn't like that, and often rewards those who attempt it with the inability to boot into Windows, sometimes permanently.
I did it once, and recovery meant booting into Ubuntu, accessing the Windows partition to rescue everything of value, then reformatting the partition and getting rid of Windows entirely.
By the way, it worked out: I've never reinstalled Windows on that machine and I've never missed it. The safest way to reduce the size of a Windows partition is from within Windows itself. Once you have repartitioned and cleared out the space for a new OS, then is the time to boot into the Ubuntu or other Linux LiveDisk and install.

Is it safe to restart the PC now? When you select a volume that already has data on it, the pie chart shows a shaded area representing the amount of data on the volume and an unshaded area representing the amount of free space available for another volume.
Disk Utility also shows whether the volume can be removed or resized. Note: If you see a small volume with an asterisk, the partition is smaller than can be represented at the correct scale in the chart. Click the Add button below the pie chart. Note: If you click Add Volume instead, you can click the Add button to create an additional APFS volume in the container, or click Cancel to return to the Disk Utility window without making any changes to the storage device.
Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose a file system format. If a dialog appears that indicates it will take a long time to resize the startup volume, read the information in the dialog, then do one of the following:.
